Finding the medicine you need, across every pharmacy in Addis

Patients used to call pharmacies one by one, or walk between them. Medhanet made stock searchable across the city; we designed and built the whole platform, from pharmacy onboarding to the daily reports that keep the data worth trusting.

The problem

Drug availability in Addis Ababa changes daily and lives in each pharmacy's own ledger. Patients with a prescription had no way to know which of a hundred nearby pharmacies held their medication, and pharmacies had no incentive to publish stock that would be out of date by the afternoon.

What we built

We treated data freshness as the product problem rather than the search problem. Pharmacies needed publishing to take minutes, and needed something back for the effort — so the same pipeline that feeds search also feeds their daily demand report.

01Bulk drug upload with column mapping and validation, so a pharmacy publishes hundreds of items from its existing spreadsheet
02Search tuned for brand names, generics and Amharic transliterations, tolerant of the way patients actually type
03Daily reporting and event tracking that show each pharmacy what patients searched for and did not find
Outcome

The platform is live and in daily use by patients and pharmacies in Addis Ababa, with search demand data now informing what pharmacies stock. The engagement has run continuously since the first release.
